We have finally arrived, WinZip has recently decided to bring to us their utility app to zip and unzip files!
Sadly, it was not built natively for BlackBerry 10. It is an Android Port. Now I am someone that is not automatically against Android apps being ported over. In fact, I think it may be the way to get some of these developers to start ‘going native’ as it were. There are two schools of thought on this subject. One way of looking at it is that if the developers can port over android apps, then they will never want to take on the additional expense of going native. The other idea, is that once a developer sees interest in their app on BB10, that then moving forward they will choose to go native. I tend to follow the latter way of thinking.
I don’t think this is a case that we will ever see WinZip native though. Why? Because it is an unneeded app for us BB10 users. BB10 has something that iPhone and many android phones do not have, a file manager. And our file manager does many lovely things for us, among those things, it brings the ability to zip and unzip files.
There is one purpose I can see here though, when Android and iOS users tell us we are missing this vital app, they don’t want to hear that we don’t need an app for that (uhm…. we don’t) so now we can show them that yes, we can download an app for that. I’ll still tell them we don’t need it though, just because I like to see the fun reactions they give.
