WhatsApp support for BlackBerry’s own OS ends in less than a week.
WhatsApp has been threatening to leave BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 for some time. Users of the messenger app on these OS’s have been quite lucky that the company has extended their end date twice before. The last extension allowed that users would still be able to use the service, though not be able to create new accounts, nor re-verify accounts, until December 31, 2017. This time, it looks as if there will be no extension.
With BlackBerry themselves finally giving an end date for their own support of these BlackBerry created OS’s, it should come as no surprise that the Facebook owned messenger won’t be looking to extend their support. While WhatsApp was once one of the most regularly updated applications on BB10, since Facebook bought the messenger, it has been nothing but regular promises to leave the platform.
Many will undoubtedly see this as an argument to leave their platform of choice. No doubt, this is exactly what WhatsApp hopes they do. For those users that need to make a choice between continued use of official WhatsApp and their favorite device, I would suggest this would be the perfect time to leave WhatsApp behind. Even the BB10 version of BBM which may not be receiving the more exciting updates being delivered by Emtek to Android and iOS, is still a much more reliable messenger than WhatsApp, which has suffered several large outages over the last year.
However, if this does force a user off of BB10, or even BBOS, this would also be a perfect time to check out the BlackBerry KEYone or the BlackBerry Motion. Both of these devices bring everything you love about BlackBerry, to the Android operating system. All of the unparalleled BlackBerry security, and efficiency, with complete access to the complete Google Play Store and more apps than you would ever want.
