UTB EXCLUSIVE – Verizon To Begin Throttling ‘Unlimited Plans’

Naughty, naughty…

Verizon, the ‘BIG RED’ in the US have, for some time now trumpeted the fact that they have been honouring truly unlimited plans.

Well, it would seem, no more.

For, in a UTB EXCLUSIVE we have been handed the following internal Verizon document:

Effective October 1, Verizon Wireless will expand its existing Network Optimization policy to include its unlimited data subscribers using 4G LTE devices who have fulfilled their minimum contract term.

What is Network Optimization?

Network Optimization manages the traffic on our networks so all customers have a great experience. Verizon uses network intelligence to carefully control when or if there is a change in data speed for customers who meet very specific criteria. Customers who meet the criteria may have their data speeds periodically reduced. These customers are identified via the Network Optimization codes that are automatically added to their lines.

The reduction remains in effect while on a cell site that is experiencing high demand. The customer may continue to be impacted for the rest of the current billing cycle and through the next billing cycle, but only while on a cell site that is experiencing high demand.

Customer Impacts & Options

Network Optimization Practices will only impact consumer customers (PE, ELEU, and CLEU without an ECPD Profile) that meet all of the following criteria:

Top 5% of data users
Enrolled on an unlimited data plan or feature
Have fulfilled their minimum contract term
Are attempting to use data on a cell site that is experiencing high demand
Note: Customers will not feel the impact of this if they use data for basic or low impact applications such as email.

To avoid being impacted, customers can do the following:

Migrate to a MORE Everything plan or usage based data feature
Use their device’s Wi-Fi options
Use VZW tools to track and manage data usage:
View real-time data use information on My Verizon and My Verizon Mobile
Predict data needs by using the Data Calculator
Install the Data Usage Widget (available on most smartphones)
Dial #DATA from the device to receive a text with data use information
Customer Notification

Beginning 8/1, customers will receive the following bill message regarding Network Optimization Practices:

Important Information Regarding Data Usage

Wireless strives to provide its customers with the best wireless experience when using our network. In 2011, Verizon Wireless launched Network Optimization, which slows the data speeds of its unlimited data subscribers with 3G devices who are in the top 5% of data users when they connect to a cell site experiencing high demand. Effective October 1, Verizon Wireless will expand its existing Network Optimization policy to include its unlimited data subscribers using 4G LTE devices who have fulfilled their minimum contract term. Based on your plan and recent data usage, one or more lines on your account may experience a reduction in data speeds when connected to a cell site experiencing high demand. Customers on MORE Everything or other usage-based data plans are not subject to Network Optimization. For more information about our Network Optimization, please refer to www.verizonwireless.com/networkoptimization.

What a wonderful phrase ‘Network Optimization’ is!

Or should that be…

‘Not getting what you thought you were?’

Still, throttling by carriers doesn’t REALLY exist…

Does it?

Come on Verizon, we BlackBerrians backed you in the past…

Time to play the game properly or people may go somewhere else.

Just a thought.

Verizon customers have until October 1st to decide.

I’ll leave that one with you.
