Tom Hanks stars as Fred Rogers.
Earlier this year, we learned that everyone’s favorite nice guy, Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Toy Story) would be taking on the role of Fred Rogers in the new film about his life. Today, Sony released the first trailer, giving us a glimpse into this touching story.
Fred Rogers has become an icon for education, child development, public broadcasting, and advocacy. He started out with an idea that all people are special and deserve to hear that, and he campaigned for the platform and access to share that message with the world. His television show, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, still inspires millions to accept, love, and understand one another. It was a simple, quiet, and yet groundbreaking show that taught children that being different and using your imagination are strengths instead of weaknesses.
Hanks is perfect casting for the role. He brings the kindness and gravity that gives Rogers his classic gentle authority. However, the film isn’t just about Rogers. It actually tells the story of a journalist who is assigned to profile the TV icon, and is forever changed by the experience. The theme is similar to The Case for Christ.
Also starring Matthew Rhys and Enrico Colantoni, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood premieres in theaters this Thanksgiving.
