Who thought this would happen?
I like zombies. I like humor. Mash them together, and I’m definitely there. Zombieland did just that, and has gone down as a favorite of mine. A great cast, a great story, some great humor, and zombies. What could go wrong?
What went wrong, was that it ended. The movie was surely popular enough to get a sequel, and it seemed that all things were pointing to one being delivered. But it never happened. It was rumored, but it seemed it wasn’t to be.
Almost a full decade has passed since its 2009 release. And the stars of the movie, have all gone on to do bigger and (arguably) better things. There’s just no way that Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Woody Harrelson would return to the world of double-taps and Twinkie hunting. No, if we were ever going to see a Zombieland 2, we could be assured that it would be some studio money grab that had nothing to do with the original. Luckily, this time the story has a happy ending.
Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch has confirmed that the sequel is now set to roll! All four of the original leads will return to reprise their roles, but it doesn’t stop there. The original screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are returning, along with original director Ruben Fleischer. The plan is for the movie to be released in time for the 10 year anniversary of the original release.
Stories like this don’t happen often in Hollywood, and I’m not holding my breath that everything will go off without a hitch. But if it does, I’ll be anxiously awaiting the release.
