When information security is not invested in, it is too late to discover that the information has been stolen.
The Marriot hotel chain, considered one of the largest in the world, reports that they detected a security breach that apparently started somewhere in 2014 and has since affected 500 million customers. The hotel network only located the breach only on 10 September 2018 and this was quite coincidental.
According to the report, a vulnerability enabled hackers to steal the information of customers of the Starwood chain owned by Marriot. Marriott’s subsidiary brand contains a large number of hotels around the world including Israel.
According to the researchers who helped the network identify the serious breach, details such as e-mail, phone numbers, shipping mail, passport numbers, preferred customer numbers on the network, hotel stay data, and certain credit card details were stolen.
CEO of the network said
“We fall short of what our guests deserve and what we expect of ourselves. We are doing everything we can to support our guests, and using lessons learned to be better moving forward.”
The network sent messages to customers who were staying at the company’s hotels during the said period, you should check that you are not on the list.
