Remember the awesome Sony Walkman?

Ah, those halcyon days of grabbing a couple of mix tapes and clipping the cassette Walkman to my belt. Off for a hike, or a ride on my bike, funky foldable headset firmly in place listening to Duran Duran, David Bowie, Clapton, Led Zep et al. What a cool device for its’ time! That of course paved the way for Discman, and the Minidisc as well.

Fast forward to now, and we’re all sporting handsets with hundreds or thousands of songs on SD cards, various playlists, online music services, and if you’re lucky enough to own a Z30 even FM radio.

Well if you are feeling a little nostalgic, or just want to try out something new, here’s the WALKMAN app from Sony!

Yup, it’s an Android .apk but it works very nicely, and very smoothly indeed!

The WALKMAN app immediately found all my ripped and purchased songs from BlackBerry World (RIP) and 7digital, and I was rocking right away.

There is a nice carousel feature built-in that lets the user swipe to the next or previous song in the current playlist. Also, the timeline widget that shows where you are in the song is very responsive if you want to skip around in the selected tune.

The handy search function will find any song with the word you chose. Here you can see results from my search term “tom”, while the current Green Day tune is playing.

Digging a little deeper, we find the settings option. In here, the user can turn on “Sound enhancements” which gives us access to a rather spiffy looking equalizer. The EQ, has a bunch of presets like the upcoming 10.3 embedded app will, but goes further by letting you manipulate a 5-band range of sliders and also includes a Bass boost, and a 3D effect!

Overall, this app has performed flawlessly in the past couple of days. It also streams perfectly to my Bluetooth devices. WALKMAN doesn’t have as many features as the killer Neutron app in BlackBerry World does, but it is colourful, and fun to use.

Anyway, if you fancy giving this music app a spin, you can download the SONY WALKMAN app here.

***EDIT*** If you are having issues trying to download the file in your phone browser, just copy the browser link, then open your Mega app, choose the “link” button, paste the browser link, and choose “import”.

Let me know what you think about it in the comments below.

Rock on, Dave out!
