While everyone is speaking about BlackBerry licensing their Android OS to secure other smartphones, what catches my eye is John Chen saying that BlackBerry wants to secure more then smartphones. They want secure every product that runs Android.
To grow, BlackBerry needs to put the BlackBerry Secure OS in more products and Smart TV’s are big way to do that. If you buy a smart TV you probably bought a TV running Android, and with millions of smart TV’s that will sell, this is great opportunity to grow.
When I imagine how it will look, I see the BlackBerry experience in the TV. It will have the root of trust so you can’t root your TV, with that of course you will need the DTEK app to run in the background of the TV to check if there something wrong with the TV security.
Today most of smart TV apps are content apps like Netflix or Amazon or sport apps cause on TV you consume content, but if BlackBerry will bring some of their experience, the user will enjoy more apps like the Hub maybe.
One app will be Power Center to manage your TV settings, from Screen Saver to encryption level.
Even Android streamers will be secured by BlackBerry, so if your TV will be android it will be much easier to connect between them, but if you will try to connect your secure TV to some non secure streamer, your TV will notify you about it and will let you choose if you want to take the risk.
The most important feature will be monthly, security update to your TV. BlackBerry, like with the smartphone OS, will keep the TV up to date in security terms.
