Need To Replace A Cracked iPhone 6 Screen? It’ll Cost More Than A Better BlackBerry Leap

broken iphone screen

A conversation developed earlier between myself and some of my British BlackBerrian chums in a BBM Group we have about just how appalling the value for money is in the case of the iPhone. This, I’m sure, you will be aware of. It really is an overpriced designers dream, desirable on the outside, utterly useless on the inside. Sort of like a well wrapped Christmas present where the gift itself is an empty box.

As part of this chat someone said ‘a friend of mine can’t afford the £185 to sort out her iPhone 6’s cracked screen, I told her to save her money and get a brand new BlackBerry!’

How much???

So I went digging. And what I found was quite frightening. £185 was too low.

As we have reported in the past when Apple launched the iPhone 6 they ordered 50% of their expected sales in replacement screens. That’s how bad the quality is, they know it and they get the part in so that everyone can get their slice. What we didn’t know at the time was just how much that slice would be.

I started off in the lair of the apocalypse. All seemed quite incongruous at Apple UK’s iPhone Support:

How much does iPhone screen repair cost?

Repair and replacement costs depend on your iPhone model and your AppleCare product coverage.

When you request screen repair online or by phone, Apple will place an authorization on your credit card to cover the iPhone out-of-warranty cost. We’ll charge this amount if your iPhone has additional damage and is eligible for out-of-warranty service. If your iPhone has no damage other than the screen, we’ll charge the amount below. Learn more.

iPhone 6: £86.44

iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5: £106.44

Fees are in British pounds sterling and include VAT and a £7.44 shipping fee. Pricing applies only to screen repair by Apple. Accidental damage isn’t covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.

Apple will run a diagnostic test to determine whether your iPhone has experienced additional damage. If it has, or if it needs other repairs, you may need to pay an out-of-warranty service fee.

So as little as £86.44. Plus shipping. But what’s this?

Apple will run a diagnostic test to determine whether your iPhone has experienced additional damage. If it has, or if it needs other repairs, you may need to pay an out-of-warranty service fee.

Let’s think this through. A gentle breeze has accosted an iPhone. Is it likely that the screen is all that’s damaged? Er, no. Fortunately MacWorld came through with the REAL figures:

Apple will come to the rescue and repair your cracked screen, but it won’t be free. If your iPhone is in otherwise good condition, you’ll be handing over between £86-106 – but that’s only if there’s nothing else that deems it as an “out-of-warranty repair”. If that is the case, the price jumps up to £236 for an iPhone 6. So, what other options are available?

£236? I’m choking here…

But hey, surely it’s cheaper if I avoid Apple? Well sort of. After offering a High Street solution (but not in the case of the iPhone 6) then they have an idea. What about online?

Another option to think about are online repairs services, such as MendMyi. Online repair services are becoming ever more popular, with people becoming too busy to take their iPhone to a shop themselves. MendMyi have become a household name for UK iDevice repairs and customisation over the past few years – even customising Stephen Fry’s iPhone with their Colour Lab service.

With MendMyi being a primarily online service, you have to rely on the postal service to send and receive your precious iPhone. The real question is – is it safe? People are often wary about sending their phone off in the post to a company that they’ve found online. What if it breaks? MendMyi offer an additional ‘Express Pickup’ service that insures your iPhone in transit. MendMyi is very active on social media and you can chat to the guys on Twitter before sending your phone off, or alternatively drop it to one of their branches in Haverhill, Cambridge or Sudbury.

MendMyi only use official Apple parts in the repair so you can be sure that your screen replacement is genuine. They also run a diagnostics test on your phone while it’s being repaired to make sure there’s nothing else wrong with it – a great extra that you won’t find in many phone repair services.

So, what’s the down side? When it comes to pricing, MendMyi aren’t the cheapest – while an iPhone 5S screen repair costs a reasonable £87, an iPhone 6 screen repair jumps up to £287. While that may be more expensive than competitors, MendMyi aim to have your phone diagnosed & repaired within 1-3 days and it is couriered back to you shortly afterwards.

£287??? Dear God!!

The last 2 options they discuss are one enterprising outfit that offer to come to you (if you are in Central London only) and then doing it yourself which, let’s be fair, isn’t really an option for 99% of customers.

So, with a replacement iPhone 6 screen costing as little as £236 and as much as £287, how much would it cost me to ditch Apple altogether?

Well, a BlackBerry Leap here in the UK is £199.

I know… it’s a bit of a no brainer isn’t it, but let’s help them out…

For that you get:

The ability to swap all your data over to your new phone
Better build quality
Better battery life
Better antenna (signal strength)
Better Operating System
Better Cloud services
More Memory
Actual privacy
And… arguably… more apps.

So, if YOU have an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus and your screen is cracked or smashed DON’T be ripped off and believe the iLies.

You’ve been bitten once, why be bitten again?

After all, only a fool puts their hand back in the fire after they’ve been burned.
