Miss Informed – Softpedia

Hello Gentle Readers. please pardon my absence, but Miss Informed has been on a short hiatus – enjoying my cribbage, knitting, and the grandchildren. Everything was peaceful and serene until I happened across an article from Alexandru Papp over at Softpedia. Now I’m not the sort to call names, but this author’s methodology is truly befuddling! The first thing that came to mind was the Bigglybobblyboo post where he questions whether reviewers actually used the device.

In this article Mr Papp actually slanders Priv sales by statements such as-

All PRIV-exclusive apps published by BlackBerry on Google Play currently stand at “10,000 – 50,000” installs, which means that the number of PRIV users that are actively using their device (i.e. basic setup and app updates, at the very least) lies somewhere in that interval.

Typically it is a journalists responsibility to research their topic and report in an unbiased and factual manner. Mr Papp smeared these basic tenets when he chose to ignore the fact that the Priv comes with BlackBerry on Google Play pre-loaded. The 10,000 – 50,000 are folks who have updated the app (Google now considers this as an ‘install’ ). In addition, due to the overwhelming response resulting in delayed shipping, getting the Priv into the hands of owners was delayed by a few weeks. Finally, taking a pulse of the sales based on a surrogate number may work, but it would be more accurate if he waited another month or so.

In the meantime, Miss Informed thinks it’s the bees knees that so many of you have discovered the Priv and are coming #BackToBlack!

How do you find PRIV apps in Google Play? I have Google Play on my Passport. I can’t find the apps.

It’s true. If you update an app it shouldn’t register as an install.

10,000-50,000 installs could be people reloading the OS for whatever reason. This points to 1,000,000 to 5,000,000 PRIVS sold. locco_smiley_40

Spot on Anthony. The problem was with his shoddy methodology to evaluate sales. Hopefully other sites won’t pick this up and run with it

I went to Google Play through my browser and “DTEK” shows-up in a Search. It has “10,000 to 50,000 installs”.

It looks like BlackBerry made the app available for Android 5.0+ devices.

These install numbers don’t reflect PRIV device sales.

Either way that’s a five-fold difference in numbers! Yet this reporter doesn’t dig any deeper to get at the real number
