The tireless native BlackBerry 10 developer Brandon Orr is working on a new 3rd party app for the Mixcloud music, podcast, mixing, and DJ service. Right now, Brandon is keeping Kloudmix to a controlled beta. More on that later.
If you haven’t heard of this service before, here’s a quick explanation via Wiki…
Mixcloud is an online music streaming service that allows for the listening and distribution of radio shows, DJ mixes and podcasts, which are crowdsourced by its registered users. Its notable users include Wired, Harvard Business School, TED Talks, and Barack Obama. Mixcloud was originally funded by its founders only and continues to be owned solely by its team.
Most everyone knows Brandon’s work through existing apps such as the excellent Pinguin, our own UTBblogs app, and more.
For the best experience on Kloudmix it’s advised to create an account by signing up through Facebook, or with just an email address here. The service has a bit of a “Twitteresque” component to it in that you are prompted to “follow” people, and of course be followed. Along with that you’ll be prompted to pick three genres of music and/or podcast types to start you off on your journey of discovery. There are 41 categories at last count to choose from.
Just for giggles, I chose the Rock category to try out… Surprised? NOT!
I found myself listening to a cool show coming from Africa called “The Wrong Rock Show”. Too cool! These members are creating their own content and radio shows from scratch! You can search a subject or artist to find mixes and shows people have created. Here’s a result for a search I did for Eric Clapton.
There are settings within the Kloudmix app to choose where you land when the app starts. Remember, we are talking early beta, but I can attest to how smooth and reliable Kloudmix is already. In order to find out a bit more about the app I took the opportunity to have a quick chat with Brandon as I had a couple of questions…
Are you keeping this out of the limelight for now, or is this something I could blog about?
Loving it so far. Have created an account, streamed to a BT speaker at home and streamed in the car on the way to work today as well.
Awesome! You can certainly blog about it, I’m just keeping it in Beta as I don’t have a final build completed yet.
Can you tell me what you might be adding or changing for the final release? Maybe a time frame for release that I wouldn’t hold you to?
I am looking to add background playback, and the ability to upload mixes from the app. EDITOR- Brandon explains that “background playback” is to keep playing your existing choice whilst searching for other content. Currently that is not yet implemented-
Mr. Orr and I go on to discuss features that may come about, among other things. So, if you want to try his new Kloudmix app out, just sign up here! I’m diggin’ it!
When asked for a release time frame, Brandon is looking for late September, but as many projects go, that could of course slip. One of the cool things about Mixcloud is the ability for you to upload your own content for others to listen to and follow, and this feature is sure to make it’s way to Kloudmix in a future update.
So, any of you budding DJ, mixmasters, podcasters out there should check this Mixcloud service and the Kloudmix app out. It’s pretty darn cool.
Looking good Brandon!
