KickassTorrents Shut Down, Founder Arrested

There are probably a large number of cyber pirates wondering where their favorite site has disappeared to today.

The alleged founder of KickassTorrents, arguably the top torrent site, has been arrested and the ‘service’ shut down. Artem Vaulin was arrested in Poland last week, and US authorities are working to have him extradited to the United States. Vaulin is being charged with one count of conspiracty to commit criminal copyright infringement, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and two counts of criminal copyright infringement.

“Vaulin is charged with running today’s most visited illegal file-sharing website, responsible for unlawfully distributing well over $1 billion of copyrighted materials” states a Department of Justice release.
KickassTorrents is based outside of the U.S. however Vaulin made a critical mistake in locating one of the site’s servers in Chicago, thereby making allowing the U.S. authorities to go after him.
