Is it really wise to call anything “the most of 2018” when its only January?
Critics are calling Hereditary the scariest horror film of 2018. And it’s still January. What is it they’re saying? It’s the scariest film of the last 31 days? Well, that’s not too impressive. Or are they saying that it’s the scariest film of the year when we haven’t seen what else is coming this year? Either way, I don’t think it’s too wise to be making that commentary this early in the year.
Still, as an avid horror flick fan, it wouldn’t be too difficult to make a movie be the scariest anymore. They simply need to actually make it scary. So many modern horror films are rehashed versions of old movies, or old plots, that it’s hard to find something that is really scary. Can they be entertaining? Of course. Can they be fun? Definitely. The latest version of IT is surely going on my favorite movie list. I loved the original made for TV miniseries, and I loved the new theatrical version. Was it scary? No, no at all. While the new take on the classic story was great, it didn’t really bring anything new, or frightening to the table.
Will Hereditary be scary? Well, it looks like it just may be. It has a few of those items which help bring the fear. Creepy kid? That’s a really creepy kid. Creepy old dead person? Yes, that’s a creepy old dead person. Creepy dollhouse? Well, that may just be the creepiest dollhouse I’ve ever seen, with some fun special effects thrown in. I’ll be looking forward to this movie.
Hereditary starring Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro, will arrive June 8th.
