I think every show with a long season, imagine doing 20+ episodes in a number of months, gets dumb and dumber in the end. Writers, no matter how creative they are, would run out of great ideas.

I think it has more to do with the original script. The back story and how far can the show develop given the characters and the environment they were set in. The problem lies with the over stretching of the plots. Some story just do not have the room to grow. But as long as the tv networks are willing to pay for it, the producer will extend beyond the organic life of a series. Wash, rinse and repeat seems to be the story board episode after episode.

I need to go back and get caught up. After the lady cop, love interest was killed, I stopped watching. No reason other than I didn't get ahold of the remote before my wife. :D
