Apple Says No Opening-Weekend Sales Numbers
Apple says they won't release sales numbers for the opening weekend of the iPhone7. From the Globe And Mail (

“As we have expanded our distribution through carriers and resellers to hundreds of thousands of locations around the world, we are now at a point where we know before taking the first customer pre-order that we will sell out of iPhone 7,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said. “These initial sales will be governed by supply, not demand, and we have decided that it is no longer a representative metric for our investors and customers.”

That's been true for many years, and yet, in past years they always announced opening-weekend sales figures. This is the first release since iPhone sales started dropping. Thus, IMO, this is clearly an acknowledgement by Apple that they're expecting the sales of the iPhone7 to be less than usual. It's an obvious and necessary move on their part.

BTW, their inventory for the first 9 months of FY17 is over $500M, compared to $61M for the same period last year. I imagine some of that inventory is for their car project.
