Bullock and Swearengen return to oppose each other.
As someone that complains about the number of remakes and reimagining that come out of Hollywood, I’ve got to admit, I’m a fan of returns. It’s been 12 years since the series Deadwood rode off into the sunset on HBO. The series was critically acclaimed, but couldn’t make it past three seasons. Now, the cast is returning to their characters in a long promised movie.
The original cast including Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker and John Hawkes will be returning to their roles. The 12 years that have passed in real time have also passed in the onscreen story. Everyone is a little older, but it doesn’t appear that much else has changed.
Olyphant’s Seth Bullock is Deadwood’s Sheriff, and McShane’s Al Swearengen seems a bit tired, but just as villainous as ever. Oh, and there appears to be lots of standoffs between the two, and lots of shooting. Series creator David Milch also returns and the movie is directed by Daniel Minahan who directed several episodes of the original series.
Attention Hollywood: This is how it’s done. Don’t erase and attempt to forget about the past. Continue the story instead.
