DC is slowly working on building the cast for their next big release in the DCEU, Shazam.
Shazam is the story of a small boy, Billy Batson, who transforms into a mighty, muscular hero, ironically known as Captain Marvel. This change takes place when young Billy calls out the titular magic word.
Zachary Levi (Chuck, Heroes Reborn, Tangled) has already signed on to play the grown-up heroic icon. While not an obvious choice, his previous work has reinforced his comedic, action, and drama chops.
Today, more news came out teasing that Mark Strong (Green Lantern) may be playing the villain in the film while Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation) is also in the cast. The specific details of their roles are still unclear.
Furthermore, Dwayne Johnson has already been slated to star in a Black Adam feature film. Black Adam is the primary adversary to Shazam/Captain Marvel.
While this may feel like yet another tick in the column for comic movie over-saturation in today’s market, Shazam has a unique history in Hollywood. In 1941, Captain Marvel became the first comic book superhero to be portrayed in film.
Shazam is set to release in 2019.
