Sony has announced they are in talks to acquire rights to the board game Settlers of Catan with the intention of producing a feature length film.
Catan has been instrumental in reviving the board game culture in modern society, offering a new format to mainstream board games. There is no direct pathway with twists and obstacles like in Monopoly or The Game of Life. Catan is more of an open world format where development and success hinges on luck and strategy.
Catan is also a great gateway game to this more sophisticated style of tabletop. The open playing board, the strategy, the common enemy (Rolling a seven is just bad.) all lend itself to encouraging the community engagement that you are playacting as you play this game.
Slated to direct is Gail Katz (The Perfect Storm, Air Force One) with Dan Lin (IT Movie, The LEGO Movie) on the assist. Whether it will be live action or animated is unclear, but the buzz is that it could become a fantasy franchise comparable to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
One can hope.
