The Canadian Press is reporting today that BlackBerry has created a new business unit, BlackBerry Technology Solutions. This unit combines “some of its most innovative technology”, including QNX embedded systems, Certicom elliptic-curve cryptography, Paratek antenna technology, Project Ion M2M platform, and BlackBerry’s impressive patent portfolio. BlackBerry Technology Solutions will be headed up by Dr Sandeep Chennakeshu. Dr Chennakeshu, a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and Southern Methodist University as well as Bangalore University and the Indian Institute of Science, has previously worked for Sony-Ericsson and was president of Ericsson Mobile.
BlackBerry CEO John Chen asserts that “combining all these assets into a single business unit led by Sandeep will create operational synergies and new revenue streams, furthering our turnaround strategy,”. Personally I think it looks to be an example of putting all the smart people together to see what kind of magic can be created. It’s decisions like this that make me not only a big fan of John Chen, but also increasingly excited to see the future of BlackBerry.
