In April it was announced that BBM video chat on iOS and Android was being beta tested in Canada and the US. On June 1st, the testing was expanded to include Latin America. And today, we’re happy to announce that the beta programme has been expanded to include 17 countries in the Middle East and 109 countries in Europe and Africa.
As before, users shouldn’t have to do anything to enable the feature, as it’s automatically available in the latest release of BBM on iOS and Android. To use the feature, simply initiate a BBM call as you normally do, but this time select Video Call instead of Voice Call. NOTE: during the beta period, the person you are contacting must also be in the beta programme (simply using the latest version of BBM on iOS or Android). Once the beta testing is completed, and the feature is officially released, you’ll be able to video call BBM users on BB10, iOS and Android.
BlackBerry is planning to officially release the feature globally in July. I can’t wait ! With Apple facing the possibility of having to shutdown Facetime as a result of losing a patent-infringement lawsuit to VirnetX, BlackBerry has a golden opportunity to increase BBM’s market share among iOS users.
