BBM Airtime Top Ups; How-To, and Why

If you are a frequent traveler, you will find BBM Airtime Top Ups a very useful feature. As most of you are aware, international roaming can be quite expensive. The last two months have been quite hectic for me with one trip to Cambodia, two trips to Jakarta and three trips to India. Since I travel frequently to India and Indonesia, I maintain a local prepaid SIM card for both countries and use them when I travel. I usually top them up when I land in the respective countries, but since I had to make immediate trips, my balance in the pre-paid cards was exhausted. I decided to try the BBM Top Up feature so that I would have credit and data service available ready to use, even before I landed.

It should be no surprise that it’s a fairly easy way to top up your international SIM card; here’s how to do it. By tapping the BBM menu button at the bottom left corner, you can see options for BBM shop. If you are on the Passport, you will see all the options available at the bottom of the screen in the BBM app. (See pic above)

The shop is a place where you can set chat wallpapers (currently only free options available) and purchase stickers, (free and paid) or a few sponsored apps. You will also find the airtime top up option for international SIM cards at the top of the screen. By clicking the top up option, you will be directed to a screen where you need to input the international number that you wish to top up.

BBM will automatically find the carrier based on the number you input and suggest the available top up options in local currency as provided by the international carrier.

Voila!!! You have an instant balance on your international card and are all set to go even before you even board your flight. No more waiting in queues at the airport to top up, or wasting time searching for a money exchange counter to convert money to local currency. (Currently only Visa and Mastercard are supported for payment.) I also like that with BlackBerry, I can have a peaceful sleep during my flight knowing that my personal data and credit card details are in safe and trusted hands. Of course, one can also use this feature to gift airtime to loved ones traveling abroad. All in all, BBM Airtime Top Ups is another well thought out feature from BlackBerry designed for connected and busy people.
