Apple Geniuses Experience iPhones Explode

What’s worse than an iPhone blowing up in an Apple store? Two iPhones blowing up in Apple stores.

iPhones explode. Apple would prefer people not think about that. Apple blogs would rather we all link Samsung with the stories of phones exploding. But the fact remains, iPhones explode. You can’t go more than a few months without a story of an iPhone explosion. The story is always the same. An iPhone explodes, there might be damage, there might be injury, and Apple states they will investigate. End of story, until the next explosion. This week though, the explosions happened while the phones were in the care of the Geniuses at Apple stores, and it happened twice.

The first incident happened in a Swiss Apple store. As an employee attempted to repair the phone, the battery overheated and smoke began to spew from the phone. Employees used sand to extinguish the phone. After police evacuated the store, seven people required medical attention for smoke inhalation. The employee who was attempting to repair the phone when it blew up was treated for burns on his hand.

One day later, it happened again. In Spain. In this instance, store employees immediately evacuated the store, opened all windows, and extinguished the flames with sand. No one required medical treatment in this case.

Apple has recently come under fire for slowing down user’s phones in what most deem to be a straightforward case of planned obsolescence. Once caught doing so, Apple has offered a $29 deal for the replacement of iPhone batteries for some later models. I can only assume many are taking advantage of this deal, and we could see many more stories of iPhones exploding in Apple stores.

From an outside perspective, I would like to give Apple some credit. After all, seven people needed medical attention after the first explosion. The following day, in another country, store staff was able to handle the emergency in such a way to prevent injury. If Apple is capable of training a global staff on emergency handling of exploding iPhones in one day, that’s pretty impressive. Also, I hope they’re getting a good deal on sand.
