In a stunning move the U.S. dedicated funding to it’s cellular infrastructure by committing $400M towards 5G research. Funding will be used to set up 4 test centers, establish an Advanced Wireless Research Initiative (led by the National Science Foundation), and academic research. In addition to participation of all 4 major Carriers (Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon), the Federal Communication Commission decided to designate specific frequencies and set out usage rules for 5G networks.
The implications of this move are far reaching – especially when you consider the IoT.
Exciting times indeed!
