WhatsApp Calling Comes to BB10

I believe it was less than a week ago that I saw the news that Whatsapp’s voice calling feature came to iOS. I thought it would be a few months before we’d see it on BlackBerry. I was wrong!

With the newest version of WhatsApp published today in BBW, BlackBerry users app matches that of Android and iPhone.

But I must ask why?

I tried WhatsApp once. It must have been years ago. It was an app that stayed on my phone for probably less than a week, although I’m sure my telephone number is still counted as a user. Upon hearing the news, I ran off to BBW to see what the fuss was about.

I read the description, that reads as an advertisement. BBM meets all my messaging needs. After all, an truly international band of goofs manage to run UTB entirely through BBM. But might as well look at the competition right? Rest assured, after reading the sales pitch, UTB shall remain on BBM.

A few highlights,

NO HIDDEN COST: Once you and your friends download the…

I tend to disagree. I think there are some rather expensive hidden costs. And soon they brag about these costs.

MULTIMEDIA: Send video, Images and Voice notes…

BBM does that.

GROUP CHAT

Nothing compares to a BBM group

NO INTERNATIONAL CHARGES

Well duh.

SAY NO TO PINS AND USERNAMES: why even bother having to remember yet another PIN or username? WhatsApp works with your phone number, just like SMS would, and integrates flawlessly with your existing phone address book.

Problem number one. Part of the beauty of BBM is the fact that it uses PINS. It provides users a safety net. Have a problem with someone? Block them. Walk away from it and know that they cannot track you down by a PIN. In fact, the only personal information they have about you is what you choose to give them. With WhatsApp, they have your phone number. Everyone has your number.

NO NEED TO ADD BUDDIES: Your Address Book is used to automatically connect you with your contacts. Your contacts who already have WhatsApp Messenger will automatically be displayed.

This, is my biggest problem. With BBM, I have a choice of who I add. A choice of who gets to see things like my avatar and status updates. I don’t have to worry about a former customer from years ago that still has my number in their phone, can suddenly keep up to date with my happenings.

Thank you WhatsApp for the timely addition of the calling feature on BB10. But will I be using it? No thank you.

    Nice post Brad

BBM is my go to messaging app, but I do have WhatsApp installed to communicate with a few of my family members who don’t have BBM installed.
