What’s That About WhatsApp?

image

WhatsApp has released a new web browser based version of its chat client. With this new version, users will be have their chats not only on their phone app, but also through the Chrome browser on their computer.

Those of us that have been playing with the various BB10.3.1 leaks, as well as those lucky users on a BlackBerry Passport, Classic or Porsche Design have already been enjoying an experience much like this for a while now.

Now, WhatsApp users on Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry devices can enjoy the new service.

See something missing there?

Yes. You saw that right. No iOS. No iPhone. And there’s been some shock over this. Over at Gigaom they asked why? They received an answer any of us with iFriends on BBM already knew.

Apple has no background multi-tasking and no proper push technology. So it is a bad user experience on iOS.

Now we’ve heard complaints from iOS users before about BBM. We’ve told them this very same reason as to why their BBM experience just isn’t as swell as ours. Yet they never seem to believe us. In fact, I’ve had many use WhatsApp as an example to tell me it’s the fault of BBM and not iOS. Now if I can just remember who made those arguments, I’d love to share the quote from WhatsApp with them.

In the meantime, all we can really do is feel bad for iOS users and their poor user experience, because really, we all know it’s more than just messenger apps where they’re suffering.

As for the app itself, I don’t use WhatsApp. I’m really not comfortable with their method of using phone numbers to identify users. I’m uncomfortable with their security, or lack thereof. And I could never use WhatsApp as a true messenger due to their down time. What about you? Do you use it? Have you tried the new functionality? Like it? Hate it? Let us know in the comments.

Well well well….hate to say we told you. Actually not we don’t. Told you so iTrolls.

I installed whatsapp on my Z10 two years ago for a single contact. I have since shown him the light and uninstalled the app a couple months before getting my Passport. My Passport is now complaining “You need to update your account password for whatsapp”, even though it’s not installed. This has me worried and the only solution has been to reinstall whatsapp and keep it. Not liking this one bit. In fact, I’m a little concerned how partial account information is still in my phones configuration without any access to it. Anyone with ideas?

That’s odd. Have you gone into BlackBerry world and removed it completely? So once deleted got into BlackBerry world and long press on it in the “available” section under my apps and games and remove it.

And I thought I knew my BB10. Let’s see what happens. If it doesn’t come back in a day, you are the winner.

The app now allows you to delete you account in the settings. Try that and see if it fixes that issue.

      • Ithinkthere4iam

Nothing in the settings referencing whatsapp. I’m trying to see if deleting it from BlackBerry world as well does the trick. Thanks.

        • ital1

Settings > Account > Delete My Account. In the Whatsapp app settings.

          • Ithinkthere4iam

            Not there.

            • ital1

Strange; that was added long ago to the app.

              • twstd.reality

It’s there. I am staring at it right now.

  • Ithinkthere4iam

I don’t have whatsapp installed. From what you are suggesting is that I reinstall whatsapp and delete it from within the app. So far having deleted the app from BlackBerry World appears to have worked. I will know for sure if the notification doesn’t reappear by tomorrow. Thanks for your help everyone.

    • twstd.reality

You probably should (delete your account). If you don’t, people can still message you.

Just set this up for my gf. She was waiting for it to come to blend, but she is happy nonetheless. Once it’s on blend she’ll be even happier.

I did notice it’s not available on my z30 though. We both have the same OS and updated whatsapp and I don’t have the option to scan the QR code.

  • Ha ha. That’s great. It was just a matter of time before iOS would not support a popular tech. As if NFC, bluetooth, email attachments, SD cards, etc. weren’t enough for people to get pissed. Finally an app does it.

As for Whatsapp, it’s terrible for anyone who keeps business and personal contacts on their device. It’s impossible to separate the two worlds. I don’t accept Facebook invites from business colleagues for the same reason.

I think Whatsapp is for kids, it’s not for professionals, IMO.

I found yet another reason to dump WhatsApp all together.
I heard that, now that it’s part of Facebook, adds will be used / shown.
And I fear that they will start to go the way Facbeook is now, showing alot of stuff that has no need being there.
No more FB for me, as of this year and Im not using WhatsApp anymore as everybody I know has BBM (also)

I don’t use WhatsApp either but I have sent this excellent piece of work to the resident iDiots on my contact list!

  • Robert

I stopped using WhatsApp a long time ago because I wasn’t in agreement with it making me available to anyone. Everyone important that I communicate with is done through BBM. Even my customers that are using iOS and Android prefer BBM. Some use WhatsApp but only on a personal level with their friends. Anything work related is always down on BBM.

So deleting it from BlackBerry World wasn’t enough to remove that annoying notification. I have now reinstalled whatsapp, deleted my account from settings as indicated and proceeded to remove it once more from BlackBerry World. Let’s see what happens. locco_smiley_27 locco_smiley_26 locco_smiley_21
