WhatsApp has released a new web browser based version of its chat client. With this new version, users will be have their chats not only on their phone app, but also through the Chrome browser on their computer.
Those of us that have been playing with the various BB10.3.1 leaks, as well as those lucky users on a BlackBerry Passport, Classic or Porsche Design have already been enjoying an experience much like this for a while now.
Now, WhatsApp users on Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry devices can enjoy the new service.
See something missing there?
Yes. You saw that right. No iOS. No iPhone. And there’s been some shock over this. Over at Gigaom they asked why? They received an answer any of us with iFriends on BBM already knew.
Apple has no background multi-tasking and no proper push technology. So it is a bad user experience on iOS.
Now we’ve heard complaints from iOS users before about BBM. We’ve told them this very same reason as to why their BBM experience just isn’t as swell as ours. Yet they never seem to believe us. In fact, I’ve had many use WhatsApp as an example to tell me it’s the fault of BBM and not iOS. Now if I can just remember who made those arguments, I’d love to share the quote from WhatsApp with them.
In the meantime, all we can really do is feel bad for iOS users and their poor user experience, because really, we all know it’s more than just messenger apps where they’re suffering.
As for the app itself, I don’t use WhatsApp. I’m really not comfortable with their method of using phone numbers to identify users. I’m uncomfortable with their security, or lack thereof. And I could never use WhatsApp as a true messenger due to their down time. What about you? Do you use it? Have you tried the new functionality? Like it? Hate it? Let us know in the comments.
