UTB Math Quiz

Pythagorean

So BlackJack was bored and daydreaming of the upcoming BlackBerry devices…and realized he would need some sort of comparison guide in order to do some mathematically correct imagining.

Searched the internet for some graphical data, found nothing useful, then remembered that if you want something done right, you just have to do it yourself.

So he dusted off the old Trig book, pulled out the old Pythagorean theorem and the old BBOS Pocket 10C SE HP calculator emulator app, and set down to some serious figgerin’.

And here are the results. Of course I included my work (above) so feel free to check my math as well if there are any Math teachers or rocket scientists amongst you.

Below is your useful comparison chart to assist you in deciding just which BlackBerry is ripe for you. I hope you find it useful in your selection! And feel free to distribute and tweet, print a wall chart, make a calendar or use it for whatever you find it useful for, compliments of UTB.

And now for the quiz. Close your books get out your #2 pencils and tell us which of all BlackBerry devices has the highest pixel density? Or just guess. No cheating, copying from your neighbor or Googling. Write your answer in the comments below. First correct guess gets an ‘A’ . You may be surprised at the answer! I was. Pleasantly.

Blackjack

I am a long time BlackBerry user and fan. Beginning with the 7520, I have recognized the value of subtle productivity enhancements in BlackBerry devices for business communication and have never since strayed. Even when the iPhone took the market by storm, I was unimpressed, because it did nothing to help my business needs. Currently enjoying my one handed dream phone, the Classic! BB10 with a toolbelt! Today I contribute to UTB whenever I feel that I can help enlighten someone on the benefits of using BlackBerry over any other platform.

  • razrrob

That would be the Classic at 475.81 PPI

PPI is calculated by the following-

√1440 squared + 1440 squared / diagonal measure of screen in inches

    √2073600 + 2073600 / 3.5 squared + 2.47 squared = c2

    √4147200/ 4.28

    2036.47/4.28

    475.81 PPI

Only reason Classic wins over the Passport is because of the smaller screen dimension resulting in a smaller denominator

    • Blackjack

That would have been my first guess. Now do the math.

    • Blackjack

      Ha! no editing!

      • Blackjack

Cheat! Go to Principal Grim’s office right now young man..Move it! locco_smiley_43

Hmm I just may make another revision..good call.

  • Blackjack

Keep up the guessin /figgerin…winner will be announced tomorrow at high noon PST

  • Anthony

The Classic is not 1440 pixels! locco_smiley_20

The Passport, 1440/3.18=452, has the best pixel density…

  • Blackjack
  • jrohland

if the classic pixel count is correct, it is the clear winner at 475.37

The math: I cheated by using a PPI calculator Web site:
    http://pixeldensitycalculator.com/
Diagonal screen size is calculated as follow:
    Square root of ((X axis^2) + (Y axis^2))
    The classic screen diagonal:
    ((3.5^2=12.25) + (2.47^2=6.1009)=18.3509)=4.284

  • Blackjack

Multiple other sources show Classic at 1440, many I do not care to link…the usual. if someone has other info please provide source.

    • Anthony

These sources are probably quoting each other. locco_smiley_8

      • Blackjack

        Possible…so show me yours.

        • Blackjack

Important to know to confirm the winner. Who will win exactly as much as UTB contributors are paid. locco_smiley_17

        • Anthony

          This is my source… locco_smiley_6

          • Blackjack

            That’s what I thought…

  • Blackjack

    • Reverend Grim

For a good telling off I hope you know!
      Tut tut!

  • jrohland

Please note, the more things we ask BlackBerry Assistant to answer, the smarter she gets. We are all better off when we ask challenging questions. Even though you are likely to get a less than useful answer, the people improving the systems get more opportunities to see what we want from the Assistant.

  • jrohland

I did answer the quiz. I did not use Google (perish the thought). I used BlackBerry Assistant and the BlackBerry Calculator. While BBA did use my Web search engine, I changed mine from Google to DuckDuckGo. So I did not– technically–cheat.

If the Classic is not correct, mark my quiz as wrong and, show where I went wrong “oh captain my captain”.

    • Blackjack

      Extra credit for avoiding Google…

  • Blackjack

OK one more hour for last minute entries and for Anthony to find a source…

  • Blackjack

    And the winner is…..

  • bungaboy

Using my background in rocket science just by looking I guessed the classic. LoL

  • Robert

    Uuuhhhh….the iPhone?

    *runs from angry mob*
