The Benefits of BBM Protected

BBM Protected Released Today!
BBM Protected Released Today!

Today is a big day for enterprise customers with

  • BBOS devices operating on BES 5
  • BlackBerry 10 smartphones with gold licenses on BES10 running EMM regulated Work Space mode

as BlackBerry has begun rolling out the first product from the eBBM Suite, BBM Protected.

Who is BBM Protected for?; according to Jeff Gadway, “BBM Protected has been designed for organizations with the need to protect corporate data at rest and in transit. These could be customers in regulated industries like financial services or government as well as highly security conscious organizations like law firms, or healthcare providers.”

What are the benefits to enterprises that meet the criteria above?

Security:

  • BBM Protected is the only secure IM client to use a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library.
  • BBM Protected builds on the proven BlackBerry data security model for data at rest.
  • BBM Protected uses 3 layers of security for data in transit to protect messages.

BBM Protected Advanced Encryption

Convenience:

  • BBM Protected takes advantage of the investment that customers have already made in BES; there is no new hardware to purchase, no new servers to install and no new management console to learn.
  • BBM Protected allows end users to securely message other BBM Protected users outside their company, on different BES servers without the need for costly and complex federation. When two BBM Protected users are chatting, their messages are automatically encrypted at this higher level of encryption.

User Experience:

  • BBM Protected is a single app for all chats – inside and outside the company. Users have one contact list and one chat list. They don’t need to install a separate IM app for work messaging.
  • BBM Protected security happens in the background without limiting the end user’s ability to take advantage of all the consumer features that IM has to offer. Many other enterprise IM apps limit employees to only communicating with colleagues inside the company. This limits end users who want to message customers, partners, family and friends.

With all the recent reports about hacks and security breaches, BlackBerry is once again proving to enterprises that they are the gold standard in secure enterprise communication.

If your data and instant messaging communications need to be secure, then your choice is quite obvious.

A subsequent fall rollout will bring these features to enterprises using BlackBerry10 smartphones in Work/Personal Balance mode as well as those with iOS and Android secured by BES10.

So even if I am an outsider with BBM Protected and find out what the pass phrase is for a group, can I enter a chat or even worse hack the BBM Group etc

    • Canuckvoip

No way. If it was that simple they’d NEVER get FIPS 140-2 certification. Perhaps I’m not understanding your question…

  • ital1

That’s a great question; my thoughts would be that you wouldn’t be able to as BBM Protected is controlled by the enterprise and I am assuming you mean as an outsider whose’s BBM is not connected to BES10 in regulated mode. It would be a good question to ask BlackBerry to confirm though.

  • jic999

Yes that too ..non BES client getting access to the Passphrase ! , but even a BES client to BES client. If I am a medical company setting up a Group BBM protected chat with Medical Staff of 6 and some how by mistake the medical staff releases the pass phrase to another staff or even a competitor could they bombard the BBM Protected Chat or BBM Protected Group Chat with invite requests or by knowing the PassPhrase could they hack the chat ??

    • MePiikan LzBolaz

Groups are controlled through the BES. It’s like BBM groups have now, you disable the invitation and leave the group as a closed group. Only members with keys and permission can invite others. I would assume on BES it will all be disabled and by direct invite only so it wouldn’t matter if the pass phrase was leaked.

Very good question by the way…

      • jic999

Thanks for the response, sometimes medical companies will organize Peer discussions and would only like selected medical invites to be allowed in the discussions with some flexibility to new invites and would not want the competitor to accidentally enter the discussion

      • jic999

Yup, MePiikan , you can restrict invites so only selected invites are allowed.
So no unwanted invites allowed….are you listening Whats App !!

But But this PassPhrase sent out via SMS, email , phone call of course can be intercepted so the Hacker would have half the job done but would still have to hack the triple encryption of the BES to complete the hack so Goodluck on that one !!

But a work around I am told by my IT buddy which is outlined in the BBM Protected Tutorial, is once I have started my BBM Protected chat. With in the Protected chat I can change the passphrase for next time without sending a email, SMS etc. within the Protected BBM Chat, this avoids me to send the PassPhrase via SMS , Email or Phone call.

Passpharses within BBM Protected Groups cannot be changed, So once the group has been created the PassPhrase cannot be changed. What would be nice is once the group is created to have the ability to create a new PassPhrase .

I am told People are already creating Passphrases via word of mouth amongst their colleagues avoiding SMS, email or phone calls or using HINTs : all very interesting.

For top security I would give the PassPharse via word of mouth etc….

So when you download Whats App what you get is a hackable messenger, your contact list gets bigger and your bombarded with spam messages offering services of all Kinds and a Battery Hog ! …$19B for this ???

Download BBM Protect and you get s security tutorial …….Hmmm !!!

  • Great article ital1. This is exciting. It seems BB is leaving those other (potential) IM platforms in the dust. Very cool that it is a function of the network and doesn’t require IT departments or users to go through any rigamarole to use it.

I can picture a private meeting with the What’s App team And the Zuke. ” Hey Zuke we need a What’s App Protected App ! The Zuke replies hey bozos I paid you $19B to keep non private….. BlackBerry Thru me out the door so I bought you instead !!!
