Today Ford announced that QNX will be using SmartDeviceLink (SDL), an open-source smartphone app interface which allows consumers easy app access via voice commands. In addition to Ford, Toyota Motor Corporation will be using this technology. The press release also states that PSA Peugeot Citroën, Honda, Subaru and Mazda are also exploring this option.

According to Paula Elsila, CEO of Livio, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford and the project maintainer of the SDL open source project, “Through our collaboration with QNX Software Systems, SDL will gain exposure to the many automakers and Tier 1 suppliers that use QNX technology as the software foundation for their infotainment and telematics solutions. With its large market share, QNX can play a key role in driving the adoption of auto industry standards, and we are excited to work with them in building vendor-neutral technology that can simplify the integration of smartphone apps in any brand or type of vehicle.

Controlling apps from your car seat is good.

Good story for BlackBerry. I read elsewhere where Ford put out a release that only mentioned the front end, consumer focused elements of this deal, rather than the back end where QNX does its work. I guess we can’t expect much else as Ford is in the car selling, consumer world and QNX is not, at least not on the surface. . Let’s just hope that this collaboration towards a worldwide standard is all part of a positive financial story for BlackBerry .

      Alan-
Ford favorably mentions QNX in their press release (see link at bottom of post).
While QNX is a subsidiary of BlackBerry, this is a move akin to BES12 being platform agnostic, as opposed to a ‘walled-off-garden’ approach which cuts out 87% of the smartphone market.

I’ll be in the market for a new car come spring…Ford has just been added to my ‘Must test drive’ list!
    Well done Ford!

I’ll be in the market as well. Though I’m a Honda fan, I’ll be giving Ford a serious look.
