Interview with Funky Dread: Music and BlackBerry

When we talk about BlackBerry we are always speaking about being productive. One German BlackBerry user took it one step further and combined his love for music and BlackBerry to make his music with his BlackBerry. Funky Dread known in the community as a BlackBerry Elite member who won some prizes for the music he created with his BlackBerry devices and tablet.

I decided to ask him a few questions about music, BlackBerry and all that’s between them.

(Q) Thank you for the interview, please tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

(A) Well, I’m a ground human, Rastafarie, Music Lover, DJ, a proud dad and proud member of the BlackBerry Elite program, award winning DJ with a BlackBerry Z30 device and supporter of my favorite brands like BlackBerry and MixVibes ( Music Software company from France).

I love to test Beta apps and OS. I’m 24 years old and live in Germany.

I love to meet new people around the world. I have BBM Buddies in every continent right now. A lot of crazy BlackBerry people from the communities and “normal” people for sure. (😁)

(Q) How did you start with BlackBerry devices?

(A) I’d joined #TeamBlackBerry with the Storm 9500 and the BlackBerry virus caught me. Infection from the first day I used a BlackBerry.

(Q) Tell us about your music, style and DJing.

(A) My music…. music makes me happy and helps me to relax. And so how I feel is also my style of play. If the weather is sweet and sunny it is House or Jump Up Drum & Bass or Deephouse. Deep Drum & Bass if I do not feel happy. And if you don’t see new music posts, I’m not inspired to make music.

I’m sure everyone has a favorite song where you combine special moments in your life like the last holidays, the first kiss or a good party where you start dreaming if you listened to it.

That was one reason to start becoming a DJ, producing and remixing my music.

From the beginning I was fascinated about the DJ skills and techniques, to play the music that I like, to interact with the crowd if you play the right tracks. But to be a Superstar? No! Well, to get some extra money for being a DJ, I’m not afraid about that.  😉

The best is to get some special bookings for DJing, like to play for BlackBerry at there Pop-Up-Store, Pre-opening Party for the press, etc in Frankfurt/Main Germany.

Funky

The best part of the story is that my DJ mixes played in the store all day long and over time when the Pop-Up-Store opened. My Sets or local radio.

Or to play at an underground Party in the middle of the government district in Berlin, Germany. It was a long, long time ago in 1999. I was really surprised as we left the party at daylight.

What I would like to say is these special moments, memories,  feelings, people, smiles that’s what being a DJ is for me.

(Q) How do you combine BlackBerry with your music?

(A) At the first time with my Storm, Bold, Torch BlackBerry helps me to communicate and managing a lot of stuff on an professional level.  Since the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry helps  me to make music or to DJ on the go.

It was tricky with the apps sometimes, but you can work with this to make professional music jobs like my third place in international DJ competition 2014 with the Z30.

And nowadays with Android….another level like never before. To connect my BlackBerry with my DJ controller and DJing like with my laptop is mind blowing. I’ve played a lot of times at some birthday parties for friends. If you only play for one or two hours, you don’t have to pick up all your heavy equipment. Only your Blackdroid in your pocket, DJ controller, a few cables and self powerd USB hub and Party on.

(Q) What is your preferred BlackBerry device ?

(A) I love the Priv but my daily driver is the DTEK50

(Q) Any plans for the future?

(A) Yes , I will build a new little playroom for myself with a little bit of studio flair and will try to life stream some BlackBerry DJ sessions with devices and turntables.

So if you follow me on my social network you will be informed about new sets , videos, etc.

(Q) What do you think  about combining your BlackBerry and music?

(A) It’s awesome. Since BlackBerry 10, I don’t use a desktop PC and manage everything on my BlackBerry’s and keep it done. So why not for music!

I must say every Android device with some powerful specs can do this.

The point is security. That was the reason to join #TeamBlackBerry. I love the brand, the communities, missed the OS 4.5 / 5 / 6 / at times and I believe in the turnaround.

Cyber crime are always present nowadays and I do a little bit for myself against that.

Finally BlackBerry gets my business done.

(Q) What makes it so special?

(A) If you have a new idea for a song or the sort of tracks for the next set, I don’t have to wait to come home and I can make it on the go. I always have headphones in my bag and rock’n’roll. To have my DJ equipment or producing tools in my pocket makes it easy to test my ideas now and then.

The other point is to have fun. If I was at a party and someone asked me if I wanted to spin some tracks? No problem.

(Q) Anything else you want our readers to know?

(A) Yes. Someone wonders how I use different DJ names.

The music as BlackBerryBeatz /BerryBeatz are made with BlackBerry devices.

FunkyDread is the dude behind it all and I use all DJ equipment that I can get my hands on. 😂

At lastly, I would like to thank you for the interview, Roy and UTB. Thanks to the community for reading and your support. Please follow me if you like the music I play.
