Google Play Family Library: Share what you love with the ones you love.

Screenshot_20160730-194506Google has announced their new Family Library feature in the Play Store. Now you can share purchases with up to 5 other family members using separate Google accounts. Share purchased apps, games, movies, TV shows and books as well as sharing a Google Play Music family plan.

Family Library is currently supported in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, UK and USA.

The Family Plan is free to set up and uses a common Payment method, but members have the option to use an alternative payment option. All purchases added to Family Library are available across Android devices. Movies, TV shows and books can also be shared with iOS devices, such as the iPhone and iPad with Google’s apps, and computers and Chromebooks through a web browser.  Purchase approval can also be set up to stop children buying apps or in-app purchases. In the past, families would have to share one Google Play account to achieve similar. With Family Library, you can choose which items you want to share and which to keep to yourself.

Apps and games purchased after 7 February this year are automatically eligible, but developers have to opt in to allow prior purchases to be included in the Family Library. Books are only eligible if the publisher has opted into Family Library, while movies and TV shows have to be purchased with the family payment method and rentals are not eligible for inclusion in the Family Library.

Share a Music subscription with your family
Finally, if your family loves music, you can also subscribe to the Google Play Music family plan. On this plan, up to six family members can stream millions of songs on demand for $14.99 a month.

So there you have it.  To get started, sign up in Google Play, invite your family members, and start sharing what you love! I think this is a great idea and it’s similar to what Apple has had for a few years now. I have just set it up for my wife and myself to see how it goes (all the kids are currently using iOS devices, poor sods, LOL). Let us know you if you already have this set up or share your thoughts in the comments below.
