BBM Shopping now available in Indonesia

BBM partners with e-commerce giant to bring shopping to BBM

BBM users in Indonesia can now shop ’til they drop without having to leave their favourite messaging app, thanks to a new partnership.

The instant messenger has struck a deal with Bukalapak, one of the largest e-commerce marketplaces in Southeast Asia. As a result, Indonesians can now access a huge number of products and offers, and can buy knowing they’re protected by the security BBM gives them.

Bukalapak users can easily link their existing account to BBM Shopping; new users will only need to set up an account once. After that, no future login is required, and all payments will be dealt with through BBM Shopping.

Powered by BBM Checkout

After a user’s first purchase, BBM Checkout securely stores both payment and shipping information. On subsequent purchases, the user simply taps to pay and the details on file are used. This makes the experience quick, painless and convenient.

It is clear that BBM continues to expand, and it makes sense that it would do so where its user base is largest. Whilst many BBM users are currently unable to take advantage of these kinds of developments, we should be glad that the company is taking great strides in its growth. Who knows, if the partnership in Indonesia is profitable and successful enough, we may see similar initiatives implemented in other regions across the globe.

Let us know if you are lucky enough to have used BBM Shopping, and even if you haven’t – we’d love to know your opinions on it, and on the future of BBM and these kinds of partnerships!

How does it actually work? Shopping on a small screen isn’t like shopping on your desktop computer.

Do you buy an item in BBM using a product ID number/code you see somewhere or do you browse products on your smartphone?

Maybe, just maybe, Indonesia will save the BlackBerry devices business, especially with the manufacturing joint venture the country has with BlackBerry. Indonesian designed and manufactured BB10 devices might start appearing in other markets, when the deal takes off. Dominating that market alone would yield good sales for BlackBerry, given that large population that Indonesia has.
