Alternative Browsers For Android. Part 4 – Puffin Browser Pro by CloudMosa Inc.

Puffin Browser Pro

There are two versions of Puffin Browser in the Google Play Store. Puffin Web Browser (Free) and Puffin Browser Pro.  The Free version has over 10 Million downloads and is rated at 4.2 stars but contains ads. Puffin Browser Pro has over 100,ooo downloads and is rated at 4.1 stars. Today we are taking a look at Puffin Browser Pro. It is a 25mb download, was last updated on 22 June 2016 and is now up to version 4.8.0.2790.

Puffin

Puffin Web Browser is wicked fast. Once users experience the thrilling speed of Puffin, regular Mobile Internet feels like torture. Puffin Browser Pro is the premium version of the Puffin family. It is not ad-sponsored.

Wicked Fast: It speeds up mobile browsing by shifting the workload from the resource-limited devices to the cloud servers, and resource-demanding webpages can run super-fast on your phones or tablets.

Cloud Protection: All traffic from Puffin app to Puffin server are encrypted, a protection from nearby hackers. It’s safe to use public non-secure Wi-Fi through Puffin, but not safe at all for most browsers.

The Latest Flash: We keep improving our cloud servers, and provide the latest version (18.0) of the Flash player over the cloud.

Save your bandwidth: It uses proprietary compression algorithm to transmit web data to your device, and it can save up to 90% of your bandwidth on regular web browsing. (Please be noted that streaming Flash content or videos requires more bandwidth than the normal usage.)

Features:
☆ Incredible page load and rendering speed
☆ Adobe Flash support (also works on Android 4.4+)
☆ Download to cloud (up to 1G per file)
☆ Theatre mode for Flash videos and games
☆ Virtual trackpad and gamepad
☆ Add-on functions (Pocket, Evernote, Facebook, translator and more)
☆ Colour theme for toolbar and sidebar
☆ Fastest JavaScript engine
☆ Full web experience (desktop and mobile view)
☆ Incognito tab: Auto-clean your browsing activities in the app

==== Limitations ====
* The data centres of Puffin Web Browser are in the US and the cloud servers can only access public web sites from US geolocations.
* For users outside the US, local contents, especially videos of local interest, may not be accessible from the US due to geo-restrictions in their home countries.
* Puffin is blocked in some countries (e.g., China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates) and by some schools (e.g., in United States).

As you can see from the list above, the features are quite good. It has Data saving mode, different colour themes, and the ability to set a wallpaper or even add your own. It has a Popup Blocker, option to save downloads to either the device, Dropbox or Google Drive and a choice of search engines. However, the choice of search engines is very limited – Bing, Google or Yahoo! I’d like to see more options for search engines like some of the other Browser apps available.

Start Page:

I like the Start Page. I think all browsers should have this, although that is just my personal preference. You can also set the app to open new tabs to your desired Home page in the settings. Here you can see three tabs down the bottom – Most Visited Sites, Speed Dials and Wallpaper.

Menu:

The menu is set out quite well and is accessed by taping on the three dots at the top next to the address bar. Here you can access the Start page, New tab, Incognito (private) mode, Bookmarks, Downloads, History, Settings, etc.

Settings:

The settings menu  shows Data savings, with access to Flash, Flash Quality and Image compression. Set Home page, options for opening new tabs, colour theme, block Popups, Search engine, Download location, Display and Privacy settings.

Summary:

Overall, I quite like Puffin Browser Pro. It has good features and loads web pages very fast. I think it could be improved by adding more search engine options and the ability to download to the SD card.

You can try the free version of Puffin Web browser or download the paid version, Puffin Browser Pro. Give it a go and let us know your thoughts in the comments below or discuss it in our forums HERE.
